Terminal Garden, 1986

U-matic, PAL, son, couleur + bétacam PAL

This tape made in the United States belongs to a series in which each continent is represented. Here, we find ourselves in the midst of the “computer garden” at MIT – Massachussetts Institute of Technology – in Boston.
Between hi-tech machines, in a video control room, interwoven with artificial flora, children are posed like inanimate objects. With hypnotised empty gazes, they contemplate a computer that proffers a series of anonymous advertising expressions (not advertising any product) in a neutral voice, along with extracts from Sanscrit texts about energy and life.Terminal Garden is a moral work that powerfully shows us a sensitive world rendered inert, and the power of machines over humanity.
